my health, my FUTURE - cordaid

I was born HIV positive. Because I’ve had to live with this from a very young age, I know how hard it can be for young women. I see how they are more vulnerable and stigmatised more often by society. Women often get blamed when they test positive and in some cases their family will even abandon them. That’s why I focus on young women in my work as a peer mentor for HIV-infected mothers and pregnant women.

“With some support
young women can avoid infections and unwanted pregnancies.”

I have been a mentor for three years now. I help people to stop hiding, to come together, and be hopeful. I don’t see HIV as a fatality and I help people to see it the same way. With some support, young women can avoid infections and unwanted pregnancies, and take care of themselves.
